Egmont Folk High School (Egmont Højskolen) near Hou is a school for youth and adults with disabilities. The school is currently establishing Denmark's first ocean bath – a hot-water basin with seawater from the bay of Aarhus. However, sudden illness or indisposition may be highly dangerous to a disabled person who is bathing, and approx. half of such cases prove to be fatal.
The reason for this is often that staff at the bath becomes aware of the situation too late, and therefore, Egmont Folk High School has initiated Project 'SafetyPlaster'. The project resulted in an electronic plaster for use when swimming and bathing, and the complete solution comprises three parts:
1: Electronic plaster, containing sensor, micro-electronics, antenna, transmitter, and battery. The plaster is placed in the neck of the bathing persons and will then register the position and situation of each individual.
2: Transmitter/receiver unit. Placed in the swimming bath near the basin, this unit relays information from the electronic plaster to the bath manager's computer.
3: PC-application/software. The bath manager and other staff can see the location of every single plaster and see if persons in the water encounter any problems.
The next project phase, running from August 2009 to May 2010, will include:
- User analysis
- Development of the first electronic plaster for testing
- Test of the plaster in sea water, actual test of the plaster with a disabled person (size of the plaster, shape, placing, feel, etc.), followed by an evaluation.
- Market survey (locating alternate usage of the plaster) and a preliminary business plan
